Do You Agree? ‘Nigerians Dream Is To Save Up Enough Money To Exit The Country’ – Singer, Runtown Writes

Do You Agree? ‘Nigerians Dream Is To Save Up Enough Money To Exit The Country’ – Singer, Runtown Writes

As Nigerians lament the alarming increase in police brutality and cry out for an end to the oppression, singer, Runtown, shares in his own words, his thoughts on the evil of police brutality and the experiences of the masses both rich and poor.
In his words, Runtown in an article published on Guardian wrote, ‘As it appears, saving up enough money to exit the country has now become the Nigerian dream’.
See the full piece below…It’s been over two months since Nigeria’s general elections and the tension that is borne out of vigorous political campaigns and a tussle for power has died down. Depending on who you ask, one vote at a time, the people have determined the fate of every candidate that vied for office and in a couple of weeks, newly-elected leaders will be sworn into office across the 36 states of Nigeria.
Imperative for incoming leaders, both elected and appointed, to note is that there is a hanging duty to deflate the rising tension that stems from police brutality and an urgent need to make Nigeria livable for the youth.
As it appears, saving up enough money to exit the country has now become the Nigerian dream. It has been said that the country loses a worrisome number of doctors to the UK, US and Canada every year and what’s worse is that the Nigerian healthcare system is in dire need of doctors.
This harrowing loss of bright thinkers and skilled individuals transcends the medical world. I think about Tanitoluwa Adewunmi, the 10-year-old Nigerian boy who recently became a chess champion in the US after fleeing Nigeria with his parents over terrorist attacks by Boko Haram in the north.
What would have been his fate had his parents not sought asylum in the US? My heart has recently been replete with rumblings as a result of fear. Fear for my safety and perhaps more intense, the fear of losing a loved one to what has now become an unceasing demonstration of negligence by some officers of the Nigerian Police Force.
As a young Nigerian who very well fits the description of what members of the now controversial anti-cultism/robbery unit of the police force, SARS (known for perpetuating this menace) consider a target, I occasionally feel uneasy. I am a player in the country’s entertainment sector and the nature of my job causes me to appear “unconventional”.
My hair is sometimes braided and sometimes blown out. Many times, I move around with a laptop, ride in a fancy car and yes, I own an iPhone which according to several victim/witness reports, makes me an instant suspect to the police.
Lucky me, I belong in the class of people who can sometimes afford special security. But it is puzzling that these days, we are pushed to sometimes hire men of the force to serve as security and protection against fellow officers.
Some of my colleagues have been victims of police intimidation and I can only imagine the blistering degree of brutal treatment that everyday Nigerians are subject to. On days when I can’t afford special security, what becomes my fate?
Do I have to commute by public transport, put away the devices that serve as tools for my everyday dealings or cut my hair in a bid to feel safe?It is true that the country isn’t free of offenders.
Agreeably, Internet-based crime is at an all-time high. But very needful to note is that legitimately conducted internet-based businesses are also at an all-time high. Smartphones and laptops have become indispensable tools.
As it is in other parts, young Nigerians are using the internet as a tool to amplify their creativity, access boundless meaningful information, champion game-changing ideas, scale up their start-ups and by extension, create jobs.
Given the reality of today’s digital-driven world, law enforcement agencies must begin to deploy intelligence-driven tactics to carry out just and effective policing. Criminal detection should not be conducted solely based on a person’s appearance.
Innocent young Nigerians should not be harassed, brutalized or worse, murdered over unimaginable reasons like owning a fancy smartphone or wearing an exotic hair-do.I have had series of meditations over the recent killings of innocent young Nigerians like Kolade Johnson and the guiltless young lady, Ada Ifeanyi whose lives were cut short by men of the force to the ludicrous term, “accidental discharge”.
A number of peaceful protests have been held and an array of anti-police-brutality campaigns have been launched across social media. Promises to restructure the police force have been made – but our reality suggests that no sort of reformation has taken place.
I manage to tell myself every day that the activities around the recently-concluded general elections is perhaps responsible for swaying the attention of the government because her silence amid the outcry of Nigerians has been very loud.
The people are being pushed to the wall and choked against it. There is an urgent need to curb this menace before we find ourselves in an avoidable national catastrophe.
Growing up, we were told that the police is our friend but as the years go by, this promise has become more and more far fetched. Although my spirit is enraged, my message isn’t that of outrage, it is one of faith. This is not an easy call, but I admonish everyone to choose hope because I know that the alternative is one that will leave us all in disarray
.In truth, my faith is shaky, but I look forward to a time when the sight of an armed officer will no longer inspire fear. A time when Nigeria will no longer lose its human assets and forward thinkers to other countries as a result of low pay, lack of infrastructure and general neglect. A time when elected leaders will uphold the integrity and deploy empathy.

BREAKING! Manchester City Facing One-Year Ban From Champions League

BREAKING! Manchester City Facing One-Year Ban From Champions League

Manchester City could face a one-season ban from the Champions League, if found guilty of financial irregularities, the New York Times reports.
City have been under investigation by a regulatory committee, over a series of leaks into their financial conduct, published in German outlet Der Spiegel.
Officials from UEFA’s financial control board met two weeks ago in Switzerland to finalise their findings, with a submission to be filed possibly as soon as this week.
And it is understood that the body, led by the former Prime Minister of Belgium Yves Leterme, will push for at least a one-season ban from the Champions League.
It would come as a huge blow to City and their mega-rich owners, after Pep Guardiola’s men celebrated a fourth Premier League title in eight seasons on Sunday.

Kemi Olunloyo warns Davido, as he has always been in radical support of his Uncle’s political aspirations.
The PDP advocate was also expelled from his National Youth Service Corps 2018 following his campaign against the ruling party in the country (APC).
The singer has since then continued to show immense support for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and further oppose the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Recently, his Uncle, who won the election at Osun State, was arrested (Read Here). This hardened Davido’s heart and prompted him to say I’ll things about the government.
Meanwhile, his arch enemy (as far as she shows) Kemi Olunloyo, warns Davido about the consequences of his actions, and tells him not to go against the government in any way.
She adds that they will ‘kill him’ if he doesn’t steer clear off their business (Politics).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Nigerian musician, Naira Marley, real name Afeez Fashola.
The fast-rising singer is currently being questioned at the EFFC office in Lagos.
Although the reason behind his arrest is yet to be made public, it might be in connection with his statements on social media which glorifies internet fraudsters, popularly called Yahoo boys.
The EFCC spokesperson could not be reached early on Friday, but a top source at the agency confirmed the arrest to PREMIUM TIMES.
Perhaps coincidentally, Naira Marley released the official video of his hit track, ‘Am I A Yahoo Boy’ featuring Zlatan on Thursday
Naira Marley during a recent Instagram live session, urged Nigerians to pray for internet fraudsters (Yahoo boys) saying they are the reason money circulates to the common man.
He said: “All you guys, all the money in your pockets, all the money you spend, you think it’s the government that is making the money go round?”
The video has since stirred reactions from Nigerians who described Marley as a disgrace and bad example to young Nigerians.
However, a few Nigerians have supported Marley, saying that Yahoo boys are the reason some Nigerians can eat and survive.

The singer is popular for his 2017 hit song titled ’It’s a goal.’

A famous Nigerian singer, Yemi Alade has talked about her success journey, revealing that she didn't want to become an artiste.
Yemi Alade

Yemi Alade, Nigerian Afropop singer and songwriter, says she never wanted to become an artiste prior to her incursion into the Nigerian music industry.

The 30-year-old ‘Johnny’ songstress made this disclosure on the ninth episode of the show Binging with GameChangers while recounting her early days in the industry and journey to success.

“I knew I loved music but I never wanted to be an artiste. I read geography in university because, being a very curious person, I loved the idea that I could learn about things I saw in my environment,” she said.

“But I sang everywhere, even in the bathroom, for fun. I did everything music-related wholeheartedly but I never wanted to be a music artiste. It wasn’t the plan. Then, my friend pushed me into winning the talent show. My life changed and music became a career.”

The gifted singer, while admitting that all wasn’t immediately rosy after she emerged winner of the 2009 Peak Talent Show, acknowledged the advisory and managerial roles played by her current record label in her journey to success.

“After the reality show came reality. Superstars aren’t made after three to six months on TV. My collaboration with Effyzzie Music Group was definitely the next career step I needed in that I now had a team with whom I could lose and profit,” she explained.

“When I won the talent show, record labels approached me and I went for meetings. But Effyzzie Music Group was there advising me on what to look out for, even in the meeting.

“I chose Effyzzie because they were able to see beyond the talks. I needed artiste development, a brand that is original and none of the others was talking in that line. People were trying to make me someone else and I didn’t have that strength.”

Yemi Alade has achieved incredible milestones in the music scene that could undoubtedly place her among the country’s biggest exports.

Beyond landing the MTV African Music Award and the BET Award, the singer also made the 2018 Forbes under 30 honoree list and was unveiled as part of the “2018 most influential people in Africa.”

Nigerian artists signing international deals is no longer a big deal.
As a matter of fact, it has become a normal trend but some of these deals don’t always turn out to be a great thing for the artists involved.
Burna Boy recently addressed this and called the Nigerian artists signing these deals to be careful so that they won’t become “international victims”.
But his statement came out when Tiwa Savage announced her new deal with Universal Music Group and this made it seem like he was throwing shade at her.
Now, Tiwa Savage has addressed Burna’s statement.
“I think it’s important for artists to be 100% sure and aware of what they’re getting themselves into, especially when it comes to contracts.
Burna is 1000% correct. People took it out of context, maybe. It’s a piece of great advice to any artist: make sure you see your lawyers and do your personal research,” she says in an interview with Bella Naija.
Hopefully, this will kill off the rumours about any beef with Burna Boy and Tiwa Savage.
